We need music Wednesdays

Ever since I started posting, “We need music Wednesdays” my husband has been bound and determined to find a song to contribute to the mid-week rush of musical energy. This may seem like a little thing but the thing you need to know is that when we first met our musical tastes were so very far apart. One of the things that I love about him is that despite my more calmer musical tastes he can appreciate good music no matter what the tempo and I too have surprised him on occasion by singing along with Metallica while half asleep. So, for this week’s selection I have chosen a song that he suggested. The lyrics resonate so much with me because he has “walked beside me” and he has been “the one to hold me up”. That’s what we need to survive – the unconditional support of others.  What’s your song for today?

Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

Let me know what plagues your mind
Let me be the one to know you best
Be the one to hold you up
When you feel like you’re sinking

“The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Foundation is pleased to once again host the Transforming Lives Awards (TLA), our celebration of the resiliency of the human spirit and the remarkable power of hope.

On June 6th, 2012, business leaders, government officials and other CAMH supporters will come together to honour extraordinary people who face their personal challenges of living with mental illness, addiction, or both, with inspiring dignity and perseverance.

Still, TLA is more than just a fundraising event. It’s also a bold step towards conquering stigma. More than 100 award nominations will be submitted to us from across the province. Some will come from CAMH’s health care teams and mental health agencies, others from family members, friends, even neighbours. Every nomination tells a compelling story that sheds light on the perils of mental illness and addiction, and the power of hope, healing and recovery. By telling their stories, award nominees help fight stigma: by celebrating their courageous journeys we join the fight.

We’re looking for inspiring individuals who:

  • Face the challenges of living with mental illness and/or addiction with dignity and perseverance

  • Support others who struggle with mental illness and/or addiction

  • Help change attitudes about mental illness and/or addiction

  • Serve as models of hope and inspiration to others

A big thank you goes out to CAMH for recognizing that there are wonderful people in this world that care about others and want to do whatever they can to make others feel supported, informed and empowered. It’s not just about you and me it’s about all of us.

I am so proud of myself

Nothing..absolutely nothing can replace the sheer look of pride when your anxious child runs toward you in the school yard and says, “I had such a good day today”. Then when you ask about the subject that earlier that morning brought her to tears and she replies, “It was amazing!” how can one even have words for that. I mean really! How can you capture that moment and share it with others because no words that I have could ever describe that very moment, but let me at least try.

Kind of a bad day
The note explains, “I am sorry I am glum mom but I’m having kind of a bad day.”

Earlier this morning we started our day with our usual routine. I sang the kids my very own unique version of, “Wake up ..it’s time to wake up. Good morning to you..good morning to you..good morning my monkeys.. good morning to you.” We tend to sing a lot at our house – we find it quite therapeutic, although to be honest most days we don’t notice it because it’s just second nature. Anyway, we began the day the usual way – picking out clothes, getting hair brushed and packing bags.

Thankful Tuesdays

I am so thankful today for my courage and strength. It’s what drives me forward and helps me challenge myself so that when I get through something I can look back and say, “I did that!”.
What are you thankful for today?
