Have you ever heard of “Realistic Thinking”?

Every month I have the opportunity to share a post over at the S-O-S Research Blog. This month I talked about “Realistic Thinking”. Have you ever heard of it? Ever used it? Chances are that you may use the strategy without even knowing it. There is lots of great information for you to look over. Just go on over the Danette’s Blog and enjoy. Hopefully, you’ll find something new to put in your tool box. Here’s a preview of what you’ll find.

Over the last few years there has been a multitude of tools and suggestions made to us to aid in tempering these anxious thoughts and feelings. Remember that each day, each hour, the same strategy will not always work. The distraction strategy that got you and your child out the door yesterday might not be the appropriate one for today. As long as you equip yourself with options you will always be one step ahead of the anxiety.
Take a look at the strategies below. Have you used any of these?

Toolboxes – written down on a little notepad with drawings and words that encapsulate a coping strategy. Examples: Count to 10 slowly, Sing a song, Breathe
Meditation CD – a CD used specifically at night in order to calm down and soothe the anxious mind. Example: Lori Lite of Stress Free Kids has a host of wonderful CD’s to help with anxiety and stress for children, teens and adults.

Dance Painting Reduces Stress

I found this post today about dance painting and I’d love to try it with Sydney. I’m not sure how well it would go as the performance anxiety might over rule my enthusiasm. Lately it has been all about painting and drawing and colouring for her and it seems like a wonderful opportunity to let her creativity and vision come to life. Take a look at what it takes to encorporate in some dance painting to relieve anxiety in our wondeful children.

Separation anxiety, sharing teacher’s attention with a group, making new friends, taking turns, controlling impulses can all be exciting but stressful new learning experiences for preschoolers.

With 70% of grade school age children admitting that they worry, it is never too early to introduce relaxation to children. This creative activity makes for stress free fun!
Stress can affect anyone who feels overwhelmed — even preschoolers.

Can your kids ‘catch’ your stress?

Check out this great article about the stress that we sometimes put on our kids. It really is important to breathe and calm the whole family down.

You may think you’re doing a good job of shielding your kids from your anxiety and stress. But research shows that your children are probably picking up on it anyway—and it’s affecting them, physically and emotionally, more than you could imagine.

“Parental stress can weaken the development of a child’s brain or immune system, increasing the risk of allergies, obesity, or mental disorders,” says David Code, author of “Kids Pick Up on Everything.” Research shows that kids can “catch” their parents’ stress, overloading their systems until they act out or exhibit mental and physical illness, he says. “Stress is highly contagious between parent and child, even if the parent is unaware of his or her own anxiety.”

Parenting expert Lori Lite, a mother of three, author, and founder of the “Stress Free Kids” line of books, CDs, and lesson plans, agrees. “I do believe that children feel their parents’ stress,” she says. “Children that do not know how to manage stress in a healthy manner will see it manifest in other areas like overeating, headaches, even anger.”
