Today is Bell Let’s Talk Day

Bell’s support of mental health will have a strong and lasting impact.

Don’t forget it’s Bell Let’s Talk Day – Let’s talk! RT this or tweet with #BellLetsTalk today and we’ll donate 5¢ to mental health programs. http://tw.letstalk.bell.ca/

In 2010, Bell announced the launch of an unprecedented multi-year charitable program dedicated to the promotion and support of mental health across Canada. Over the next several years, this multi-million dollar initiative will support a wide range of programs that will enhance awareness, understanding and treatment of mental illness and promote access to care and research across the country.

Often invisible, mental illness is one of the most pervasive health issues in the country with far-reaching consequences for every Canadian. One in five people will experience a form of mental illness at some point and most will be reluctant to talk to a co-worker, friend or family member about their struggle, let alone seek treatment. While you may never experience mental illness first-hand, it is likely that you know someone who will.

With more than 60,000 team members in Canada, Bell has taken the initiative to address mental illness in the workplace and at home, helping to make our communities healthier and more productive.

Bell is introducing an extensive array of initiatives to support anti-stigma, increased access to care, additional research and the creation of an overall culture of mental health support across the Canadian business landscape.

For more information on how Bell will be supporting community organisations and if you would like to be added to our mailing list, please email mentalhealth@bell.ca.

THIS YEAR, A LITTLE MORE FIRE,
A LOT MORE ICE.

ICE BOY is going to donate some of his really cool ice sculpture to dress up this year’s show. We don’t know exactly what he’ll do, but count on it being spectacular. He’s won awards for his frosty work.

OYSTER BOY will be there, shucking a mountain of oysters that they have generously provided. Goes perfectly with a martini!

Speaking of which, we’re also going to offer a signature martini that will be fiendishly hot and fiendishly expensive. The Fire and Ice Martini will be almost as pricey as those club cocktails, but it’s for a good cause. The profits will go toward paying for this event.  So cough  up and drink up (hopefully the former before the latter – it will be spicy!)

Come, bring a friend or six, bring your credit card and be prepared to go nuts. Buy like crazy. You won’t find art bargains like this just anywhere, and hey, Christmas is coming!

Thanks to Boehmer for sponsoring this fiendish concoction.

Family Support Expo – October 20th & 21st

I love this time of year. It makes gives me such peace of mind and warmth about the coming months. From Thanksgiving on to the new year there are so many wonderful things happening and such a sense of togetherness. This year I am even more excited because I will be at a function that brings together so many organizations and people all with the same goal – supporting families. The Family Support Expo is debuting this year at the International Centre where a host of different organizations will be there. The line up for the guest speakers is incredible and it is sure to be the ultimate resource for parents, grandparents, children and professionals. I am so fortunate to be a part of it. Here’s some information to get you started. To get full details visit the Family Support Expo website. Hopefully, see you there!

Supporting families in transition, from pregnancy through adolescence and beyond!
The first North American expo bringing together all of the resources needed to support families dealing with Separation & Divorce, Medical, Mental Health, and other lifestyle issues.

The 1st Annual Family Support Expo is for parents, grandparents, caregivers, children and professionals. The Expo provides information to help build and support a healthy family.

Exhibitors will showcase a variety of services and products and will offer access to community resources, organizations and experts in the industry.

All families experience challenges. Whether it is a child struggling with a medical issue or special need, a senior suffering from an illness, a family on the heels of divorce or separation, or another serious challenge – you are not alone and help is available.

The Family Support Expo may very well be the most important consumer show in Toronto and the GTA, considering its broad demographic and significant reach within the community. Data confirms that the challenges facing families are growing at an alarming rate and people need help. The Expo seeks to revolutionize how families deal with these challenges.

The 3 general areas of focus for the Expo are:

Separation & Divorce
Medical
Mental Health
Within these three areas there are many sub-categories.

Separation & Divorce
Help finding a professional (Family Mediator, Family Lawyer, Accountant, Real Estate Agent, mortgage broker, etc.)
Education and resources to help your family moving forward
Medical
Education about various medical health issues
Resources to keep you and your family feeling healthy
Mental Health
Education about various mental health issues
Resources to support your family’s mental health, including psycho-education evaluations
While the Expo cannot guarantee solutions to all areas of challenge, it stands to provide families with actionable advice and support that will leave them hopeful and optimistic moving forward.

Early treatment helps children

This is a great article. I loved this statement, “Anxiety is a bully that steals a child’s freedom”. I think any parent who has seen their child struggle feels the exact same way. What would you say that anxiety does? Do you believe that the earlier the intervention the better the outcome?

Written by Kim Hoey
The News Journal

“Whenever I’d think of someone throwing up, I’d go into complete panic,” said Parrish, now 16.

While every child will have days they don’t want to go to class, school avoidance or school anxiety affects between 2 percent and 5 percent of the school population every year.

School avoidance isn’t a disorder on its own, it is often a symptom of some anxiety being felt by the child. Common forms of anxiety include separation anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorders. Any trauma can lead to an anxiety, from bullying to not liking a teacher or, as in Parrish’s case, a fear of germs.

It’s important to figure out what is causing the child not to want to go to school, said Dr. Kathleen Rupertus, of the Anxiety and OCD Treatment Center in Wilmington. Once the underlying cause is identified, then treatment can begin. It’s not easy for the child or the parent, but generally there are good results.

Canada Post unveils stamp to benefit youth charities

I love the last paragraph in this Globe and Mail article! Get your kids art supplies out and get ready to share in the magic.

TORONTO — The Canadian Press
Published Monday, Sep. 17 2012, 3:36 PM EDT

Canada Post has unveiled a new stamp that it says will raise funds for children charities, including groups working with kids struggling with mental-health challenges.

The stamp — which depicts a heart surrounded by hands of different colours — carries a 10-cent surcharge on top of the regular 61-cent postage cost.

Those additional funds will go towards organizations and school programs that offer mental health services to the country’s youth, Canada Post says.

Customers will also be encouraged to make donations at their local post office.

The stamp, developed and released by the organization’s Community Foundation for Children on Monday, represents a key element in the 2012 fundraising campaign.

The foundation has raked in $7-million over its brief four-year history.

Canada Post chief executive Deepak Chopra says the 2011 campaign raised $2-million, which will be dispersed among 44 charities in the coming months.

“People think that donations have to be larger but with 10 cents, you can change a child’s future,” Chopra told a news conference.

Sharon Wood, president of the Canadian arm of Kids Help Phone, said Canada Post’s fundraising efforts have made a daily difference to the children her organization serves.

“Every week over 5,000 kids reach out to Kids Help Phone” she said. “And Canada Post has helped make sure that they can be heard.”

The 2012 stamp was designed by professionals, but Canada Post announced that next year’s version will be created by the people who will benefit from it most. The foundation will pick the stamp’s new design from a contest for Canadian children.
