My journey with Bach’s Flowers

Life is a journey and I am no stranger to the challenges and adversity that it has to offer. Since 2009 I have struggled with anxiety in a way that has really rocked my world. Panic attacks, catastrophic thinking and a little dance with agoraphobia are some of the nuances of everyday life that I have experienced. When I took myself to the hospital back in 2009 thinking I was having a heart attack I never ever imagined where I would be years later because at that moment in that bed I thought for sure I was dying.

If you are a frequent reader of the blog you will understand how anxiety for us is a family affair. Each one of us deals with it in our own way each and every day. Anxiety in and of itself is healthy. We need for our bodies to react with that fight or flight response to avoid getting hurt. The problems begin when anxiety, fear or worry start to impede on your everyday functioning.

I have discovered so much over the last few years about how the body works and more importantly how my body works. I have been vigilant about finding out the reasons why I feel the way I do. The answers have been enlightening despite the hard road to discovery. Let me explain why.

A few years ago when I would feel those tell-tale signs of a panic attack starting – heart palpitations, sweaty palms, whole body shaking from the inside but not visible on the outside, feeling incredibly nauseated, inability to focus, things moving too fast and noises so very loud my immediate reaction would be of course to panic; full out feeling like you are going to die for as long as it takes to surf that wave of fear panic. Most times, I had no idea what brought it on. I just knew that it was a very bad feeling and that no one else could see it or hear it or feel it but me. On the outside I looked like everything was fine but on the inside the fear and sense of doom was horrific.

Part 2 How to choose Bach Flower Essences to combat Social Anxiety

Thank you friends, for your continuing interest in the Bach Flower Essences. These precious gifts of nature resonate energetically to activate the healing within ourselves bringing forth our true, unencumbered selves. They dissolve the blocks to our happiness and peace of mind. Their vibrations resonate with the vibrations of our life-force and gently dissolve our fears, phobias, obsessions and anxieties of all sorts. Millions of people during these last 90 years have been using the remedies with great success.
Like music; their vibrations lift our spirits. The Bach flower essences can heal what is out of balance – profoundly and permanently. Unlike pharmaceutical medications which work on our brain chemistry to change our feelings through suppression, these flower essences heal the emotions directly strengthening the positive vibration in us which melts the negative emotion.

“In true healing there is no thought whatever of the disease: it is the mental state, the mental difficulty alone, to be considered: it is where we are going wrong in the Divine Plan that matters. This disharmony with our spiritual self may produce a hundred different failings in our bodies (for our bodies after all merely reproduce the condition of our minds) , but what matters that? If we put our mind right the body will soon be healed.“ Dr. Bach, 1929
A successful physician with a lucrative practice Dr. Bach abandoned it all to find a complete a simple to use, safe system of remedies from herbs that that would heal the root cause of mental and physical illness.
The system is fundamentally a customized one. The name of a diagnosis is unimportant and not useful in choosing the proper remedies.

LAMP’s Healthy Living Workshop Series: Dealing with Anxiety, Part 2

I have the honour of speaking at a wonderful series with LAMP and the Mood Disorder’s Association of Ontario on Wednesday December 5th. This workshop is from the perspective of a parent who has a child suffering from anxiety.
Leanne Needham, the co-ordinator of youth and family programs at the Mood Disorders Association, will also give a brief introduction to mental health issues and youth.

I think events such as these are so important because they bring the community together so that we can all learn from each other and find that support that we need.

For more information please go to LAMP’s website. Hope to see you there.

Do you want to join a research study

Does your child struggle with anxiety? Do they get nervous in social situations, become afraid when you leave them; have excessive worries about health or cleanliness? If your child struggles with Selective Mutism, Social Anxiety, Separation Anxiety, or OCD you may qualify for an exciting study aimed at helping children and their families! Please fill out our online questionnaires! We hope to use this study to learn more effective ways to treat childhood anxiety disorders.

Here’s some information about the study:
Family Relationships and Child Emotions

You are being asked to be in a research study that focuses on your child, their feelings, and your family relationships. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University are conducting this study. Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to participate in this study and your child must be between the ages of 4-8.

Background Information:
The purpose of this study is to learn about the family relationships of individuals whose children struggle with Social Anxiety, Selective Mutism, Separation Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). We hope to learn more about each disorder by comparing family dynamics and child behaviors and emotions across the different disorders.

Imagining All of Those “What Ifs”
The transition to back to school is always a little tricky, even for children who don’t deal with anxiety daily. Let’s face it, that nervous sensation is normal: the butterflies in the stomach, the sweaty palms, the shaky voice, and the desire to curl up inside a shell are all par for the course. It’s all part of being human. Anxiety, after all, is simply a buildup of adrenaline that needs to get out of the body somehow, but can’t.
Channeling Your Anxiety
The solution to that shaky, jittery, spinning out of control feeling was once explained to me like this: When you are feeling panicked or jittery, or like you’re losing control and you’re overwhelmed, don’t fear those feelings. Instead, think of those feelings as energy – energy that is pushing your body forward to bigger and better things. While this is happening, think about the energy as something that needs to be released and do just that: Walk out that energy, sing out that energy or just simply breathe it out
